It’s not just about making sure that men and women of every race, religion, and background are represented at every level of government – though that’s a critical part of it.

It’s not just about sending a message to our children that everyone can lead and everyone can serve – although that too is important. It’s about making sure that we have a government that knows that a problem facing any American is a problem facing all Americans.

It’s about making sure our government knows that when there’s a Hispanic girl stuck in a crumbling school who graduates without learning to read or doesn’t graduate at all, that isn’t just a Hispanic-American problem, that’s an American problem.

When Hispanics lose their jobs faster than almost anybody else, or work jobs that pay less, and come with fewer benefits than almost anybody else, that isn’t a Hispanic-American problem, that’s an American problem.

When 12 million people live in hiding in this country and hundreds of thousands of people cross our borders illegally each year; when companies hire undocumented workers instead of legal citizens to avoid paying overtime or to avoid a union; and a nursing mother is torn away from her baby by an immigration raid, that is a problem that all of us – black, white, and brown – must solve as one nation.

A government that works for all Americans – that’s the kind of government I’m talking about. And that’s the kind of government I’ve been fighting to build throughout my over 20 years in public service.Join today!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813929378856849661.post-16190757276736506722008-07-06T01:49:00.006-05:002008-07-08T23:18:32.071-05:00YOUR "LATIN SWING" VOTE MATTERS<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_0kp_mg2SrvY/SHBsPRZ7xbI/AAAAAAAAAEY/4gPAh-o7qQg/s320/Latinos+In+Battleground+States.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5219790977748420018" />
The "Latin Swing" vote will play a critical role in hotly-contested Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Florida - each of these states has a population ranging from 20% - 40% Hispanic. You know, being here today is a reminder of why I'm in this race. Because the reason I'm running for President is to do what you do each day in your communities - help make a difference in the lives of ordinary Americans. And that's what I've been working with Latino leaders to do ever since I entered public service more than twenty years ago.

We stood together when I was an organizer, lifting up neighborhoods in Chicago that had been devastated when the local steel plants closed. We stood together when I was a civil rights attorney, working with MALDEF and local Latino electeds to ensure that Latinos were being well represented in Chicago. And we marched together in the streets of Chicago to fix our broken immigration system. That's why you can trust me when I say that I'll be your partner in the White House.

And that's what you need now more than ever. Because for eight long years, Washington hasn't been working for ordinary Americans. And few have been hit harder than Latinos and African Americans. You know what I'm talking about. You know folks like Felicitas and Fransisco, a couple I met in Las Vegas who were tricked into buying a home they couldn't afford. You know about the families all across this country who are out of work, or uninsured, or struggling to pay rising costs for everything from a tank of gas to a bag of groceries. And that's why you know that we need change in this country.

And while I respect John McCain, it's not change when he offers four more years of Bush economic policies that have failed to create jobs at a living wage, or insure our workers, or help Americans afford the skyrocketing cost of college. That isn't change.

Now, one place where Senator McCain used to offer change was on immigration. He was a champion of comprehensive reform, and I admired him for it. But when he was running for his party's nomination, he walked away from that commitment and he's said he wouldn't even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote.

If we are going to solve the challenges we face, you need a President who will pursue genuine solutions day in and day out. And that is my commitment to you.

We need immigration reform that will secure our borders, and punish employers who exploit immigrant labor; reform that finally brings the 12 million people who are here illegally out of the shadows by requiring them to take steps to become legal citizens. We must assert our values and reconcile our principles as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. That is a priority I will pursue from my very first day.

And we can do something more. We can tear town the barriers that keep the American dream out of reach for so many Americans. We can end the housing crisis and create millions of new jobs. We can make sure that the millions of Latinos who are uninsured get the same health care that I get as a member of Congress. We can improve our schools, recruit teachers to your communities, and make college affordable for anyone who wants to go. And we can finally start serving our brave Latino fighting men and women and all our soldiers as well as they are serving us. We can do all this. Si se puede.

But I can't do this on my own. I need your help. This election could well come down to how many Latinos turn out to vote. And I'm proud that my campaign is working hard to register more Latinos, and bring them into the political process. Because I truly believe that if we work together and fight together and stand together this fall, then you and I - together - will change this county and change this world. You know, a few years ago, I attended a naturalization workshop at St. Pius Church in Chicago. And as I walked down the aisle, I saw people clutching small American flags, waiting for their turn to be called up so they could begin the long process to become U.S. citizens.

And at one point, a young girl, seven or eight, came up to me with her parents, and asked for my autograph. She said she was studying government in school and wanted to show it to her third grade class. I asked her what her name was, and she said her name was Cristina. I told her parents they should be very proud of her.

And as I watched Cristina translate my words into Spanish for them, I was reminded that for all the noise and anger that too often surrounds the immigration debate, America has nothing to fear from today's immigrants. They have come here for the same reason that families have always come here, for the same reason my father came here - for the hope that in America, they could build a better life for themselves and their families. Like the waves of immigrants that came before them and the Hispanic Americans like Ken Salazar whose families have been here for generations, the recent arrival of Latino immigrants will only enrich our country.

Ultimately, then, the danger to the American way of life is not that we will be overrun by those who do not look like us or do not yet speak our language. The danger will come if we fail to recognize the humanity of Cristina and her family - if we withhold from them the opportunities we take for granted, and create a servant class in our midst.

More broadly, the danger will come if we continue to stand idly by as the gap between Wall Street and Main Street grows, as Washington grows more out of touch, and as America grows more unequal. Because America can only prosper when all Americans prosper - brown, black, white, Asian, and Native American. That's the idea that lies at the heart of my campaign, and that's the idea that will lie at the heart of my presidency. Because we are all Americans. Todos somos Americanos. And in this country, we rise and fall together.Join today!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813929378856849661.post-3580139494367701182008-06-27T13:28:00.006-05:002008-06-27T13:53:22.910-05:00FOX News no es "news"FOX News continues to paint Barack Obama as foreign, un-American, suspicious, and scary. As usual, they're trying to send Americans the message that our country's first viable black candidate for President is not "one of us."

We've seen this before from FOX. They won't stop until it becomes too painful to continue—until the public calls them out and advertisers start getting worried. Now is the time to draw a line in the sand by putting FOX on notice that their behavior won't be tolerated. Nearly 200,000 Americans have already expressed their outrage. We encourage you to express yours by adding your name to this message:

"FOX must stop injecting racism, prejudice, and fear into our political dialogue. We intend to hold FOX, its advertisers, and its personalities accountable for FOX's attempts to smear the Obamas." Clicking here will sign the petition.

FOX's longtime pattern of smearing Obama and the black and Latino communities is well documented. But the outrageous moments have increased in the last month....First, a paid FOX commentator accidentally confused "Obama" with "Osama" and then joked on the air about killing Obama. Next, a FOX anchor said a playful fist bump by Barack and Michelle Obama could be a "terrorist fist jab." And then, FOX called Michelle Obama "Obama's baby mama"—slang for an unmarried mother of a man's child, and a clear attempt to associate the Obamas with negative stereotypes about black people.

If you know others who'd find FOX's recent actions despicable, please ask them to sign the petition too. The more people who sign, the bigger our impact will be.

Latinos For Obama would like to remind voters that that there are MUCHISIMO MAS legitimate and balanced news sources than FOX, among them MSNBC, NY Times, National Public Radio and the Washington Post.Join today!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813929378856849661.post-12529381407947610882008-06-25T12:31:00.004-05:002008-06-25T12:37:24.144-05:00Celebrando Obama...Latin Artists Sing OutA wide and diverse range of Latin artists have demonstrated their support for Barack Obama in song. Latino Decisions, a joint effort between Pacific Market Research and University of Washington political scientists Matt Barreto and Gary Segura, conducted the poll by telephone June 1-12.

Workers reached 800 Latino voters in 21 states. Among Democrats, the survey found that during primary contests, 57 percent had supported Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton versus 35 percent who supported Obama. During those months, many political observers questioned whether Obama would successfully woo Latino voters. The results of the survey clearly suggest the Latino vote was not anti-Obama during the primaries, and that going into the general election, he has easily built a large lead among Latino voters.

Obama's lead among Latinos is consistent among those born in the U.S. and those born abroad. Among U.S.-born Latinos, Obama leads McCain 57 percent to 26 percent, and among foreign-born Latinos, 64 percent to 21 percent. Likewise, Obama does well among Latinos across many states. In California, he leads 66 percent to 20 percent; in New York, 65 percent to 20 percent; in Texas, 61 percent to 22 percent. Combining data in the four southwestern states expected to be key battlegrounds -- New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada -- Obama leads McCain 57 percent to 31 percent among Latino voters. In Florida, where about half of Latino voters are Cuban-American, Obama has 43 percent to McCain's 42 percent. The poll's margin of error is 3.5 percent.

In 2008, the Latino vote is expected to increase to 9 million or about 8 percent. By comparison, 7.6 million Latinos voted in 2004 and 5.9 million in 2000.Join today!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813929378856849661.post-8290412088454224062008-06-19T00:11:00.000-05:002008-06-22T01:24:29.282-05:00YOUR VOTE COUNTS! Our opponent wasn't able to make a dent in the race for delegates and we are still comfortably ahead in states won and the popular vote. We have also won key swing states like VA, MO, IA and others throughout this primary process.

Now it's time to shift our focus to IN and NC. More information will be coming soon about how to get involved with Latino outreach efforts in these states and Puerto Rico.

Regarding SEMANA LATINA, below is an article in LATINA ONLINE MAGAZINE about the effort:

http://www.latina.com/lifestyle/politics/election-2008-isi-se-puedei

Election 2008: Sí Se Puede

During this week’s “Semana Latina,” Latinos nationwide are encouraged to support Barack Obama.

Forget attending fancy $500 per plate banquets to show your support: During “Semana Latina” (April 13 through April 20), Latinos across the country are hosting fundraisers aimed at raking in small donations. Supporters in Washington, D.C. can get their salsa on this Thursday at Zanzibar on the Waterfront, while New York City politicos can attend a networking party tomorrow. The admission price? Whatever you want to donate to the cause.

But you don’t even need to leave your house to plan an event. “It can be as simple as inviting people over to watch the debate on Wednesday and charging $10 at the door. Then you can send in $40 or $50 to the campaign, easy,” says Luis Maes, an organizer with the D.C.-based organization.

Latinos for Obama—which is not officially affiliated with the campaign—felt that raising small donations was a no-brainer for this week of activities because it’s a method the Obama camp employs daily. “He’s done a good job of leveraging the popularity of social networking tools on the web,” Maes says. “And the fact that my.barackobama.com has a lot of useful, dynamic tools helps get people involved.”

The Obama campaign has had great success with this small donation model. As of press time, 1,314,855 people had sent in donations, many of them for as little as $5. But those small hits add up, and Obama leads opponent Clinton in fundraising, pulling in $40 million in March alone, compared to Clinton’s $20 million haul.

Want to get involved? Visit my.barackobama.com to find an event near you; fundraisers are already scheduled in D.C, New York City, San Francisco, Austin and Miami. Nothing planned in your area? Unless every circuit is out, she'll regenerate enough to claw her way out of the grave, crawl through the Rezko Memorial Lawn and up Obama's wall, hurl her torso into the house and brutally haunt his dreams.

"It's like one of those movies where you think you know the end, but then you watch with your fingers over your eyes," said one leading Democrat.

Hillary got a boost from the wackadoodle Jeremiah Wright. As a top pol noted, the Reverend turned Obama — in the minds of some working-class and crossover white voters — from "a Harvard law graduate into a South Side Black Panther."

Obama blunted the ugliness of Wright's YouTube "greatest hits" with his elegant and bold speech on race. But how will he get the genie back into the bottle?
Pressed about race on a Philly radio sports show, where he wanted to talk basketball, he called his grandmother "a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, well there's a reaction that's in our experiences that won't go away and can sometimes come out in the wrong way."
Obama might be right, but he should stay away from the phrase "typical white person" because typically white people don't like to be reminded of their prejudices. It also undermines Obama's feel-good appeal in which whites are allowed to transcend race because the candidate himself has transcended race.

Even swaddled in flags, Obama is vulnerable on the issue of patriotism. He's right that you don't have to wear a flag pin to be patriotic, and that Republicans have coarsely exploited patriotism for ideological ends while failing to do truly patriotic things, like giving our troops the right armor and the proper care at Walter Reed.

But Republicans are salivating over Reverend Wright's "God damn America" imprecation and his post-9/11 "America's chickens coming home to roost" crack, combined with Michelle Obama's aggrieved line about belatedly feeling really proud of her country.
On Friday in Charlotte, N.C., Bill Clinton, the man who once thanked an R.O.T.C. recruiter "for saving me from the draft" during Vietnam, sounded like Sean Hannity without the finesse.

Extolling John McCain as "an honorable man," and talking about McCain's friendship with his wife, the former president told veterans: "I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country. And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."

Some people consider the Clintons to be the "stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics." Tony McPeak, a former Air Force chief of staff and an Obama adviser, accused Hillary's hatchet husband of McCarthyism.
After the Hillary camp lost — and trashed — Bill Richardson and was outmaneuvered by the Obama forces on mulligans in Michigan and Florida, Hillary's hopes dwindled down to the superdelegates.

If Jimmy Carter, Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi are the dealmakers, it won't take Hercule Poirot to figure out who had knives out for Hillary in this "Murder on the Orient Express."

Carter, who felt he was not treated with a lot of respect by the Clintons when they were in the White House, favors Obama.

"The Clintons will be there when they need you," said a Carter friend.

Al Gore blames Bill Clinton's trysts with Monica for losing him the White House. He resented sharing the vice presidency with Hillary and sharing the donors and attention with her when she ran for Senate as he ran for president.

"There's no love between him and Hillary," said one former Clintonista. "It was like Mitterrand with his wife and girlfriend. They were always competing for the affection of the big guy."

Like Carter and Gore, Nancy Pelosi was appalled by Bill's escapades with Monica. And, as The Times's Carl Hulse wrote, the Speaker has been viewed as "putting her thumb on the scale for Mr. Obama" in recent weeks. As a leading China basher, the San Francisco pol tangled bitterly with President Clinton over his pursuit of a free-trade agreement with China, once charging him with papering over China's horrible record on human rights. And she has been put off by the abrasive ways of some top Hillary people.

If Hillary's fate falls into the hands of Jimmy, Al and Nancy, the Clinton chickens may come home to roost.Join today!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813929378856849661.post-21450327173577996322008-03-20T15:50:00.002-05:002008-03-20T15:52:41.877-05:00TX Calls and Final Push for Voter Registration in PAGiven that PA is a closed primary, we need to register as many people as possible before the March 24 deadline. As in other states, the Latino vote will again be decisive and we need to do everything we can to make sure our community turns out and votes for Senator Obama.

Also, we need your help in calling Texas delegates to the March 29 County Conventions. The last item on this email is detailed information on how you can get involved with this initiative right away. Remember, getting Obama delegates out to the County Conventions is a very high priority.

Below, please find information on how to register voters in PA this weekend, call PA voters, and call TX delegates.

1) This weekend we will be collaborating with the campaign conducting voter registration activities in the Philadelphia area. Remember, Philadelphia has one of the highest concentration of Latinos in the state (especially North Philly) so it is a prime area for Latino outreach. If you are interested in traveling to Philly and are from the Washington D.C. area, please contact me ASAP at 857-998-0820. Also, please indicate whether you have a vehicle.

If you are not from the DC area, please contact Cameron Monagle from the Obama for America Pennsylvania team to arrange your trip at cameron.jm@gmail.com or by mobile phone at 401-378-5655 and 603-767-4971.

2) You can also start calling Pennsylvania voters in the comfort of your own home! Please visit: http://my.barackobama.com/page/contact/splash/callpa

3) Call Texas Delegates to County Conventions on March 29. Instructions Below -

A) Click on
http://my.barackobama.com/page/contact/splash/calltxdelegates

B) Click on "Click to get started"

You may have to log into your MyBO account or create a new one.

C) You will then receive a list of 20 names

It should look something like this: Scott in HARRIS 32
This means that Scott lives in Harris County and Senate District
32 - all calls will follow this format
The all capitalized name is the county

D) Click on the first name.

E) This takes you to a window with their phone number

Click on the "Look up County Convention Locations" to the right
of the name: This will open a new window with a list of Texas counties
in alphabetical order. Click on the proper county to get the location,
start time, and contact info for the local organizer.

F) Dial the number, follow the script on the screen and record the
responses.

G) We do not know who these people are supporting, so there could be
some Clinton supporters on the list. For this reason we are making a
candidate identification our first question. If they are supporting
Barack, then give them the info for their county convention and ask if
they will be able to make it. If they are supporting Clinton, then say
to have a nice night and end the call.Join today!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813929378856849661.post-58356045816472036542008-03-19T22:22:00.002-05:002008-03-19T22:25:56.918-05:00Texas County Convention Call Lists AvailableThe lists are now available to begin calling the delegates to the March 29th Texas County Conventions.
